Determining quality in a finished metal product can be difficult to an untrained eye. The considerations for a well-finished metal piece vary by the end use of the product (indoor vs. outdoor, strictly functional OR strictly cosmetic OR both). Here are a few quality indicators that may initially go unnoticed, but will have an affect on the integrity and longevity of your metal piece.
For examining cuts with a CNC plasma cutter, look for uneven edges or notches out of the elements of your design. A CNC plasma program should be created to eliminate or minimize these imperfections in the final piece, and the creator must have careful attention to detail when creating the CAD drawing. Letters with holes in them (think A, O, lower case e, etc) are another place to look for detail- a good CAD artist should be able to keep these letters in tact and attached to your design. Watch for these details when you come across metal signs, and you will be able to appreciate these characteristics.
The creator of your piece should choose an appropriate thickness and finish for your end product. For example, a piece that will be subjected to the outdoor elements may need a thicker gauge and a special type of paint. Indoor pieces may be thinner material which will be easier on your walls as well as your pocketbook. A piece that will be subject to fire (firepit/ grills, etc.) will need appropriate metal thickness and paint to prevent warping and enhance durability. Your metal designers should be able to answer these questions about their products clearly and give you confidence in doing business with them.
A last consideration is the finish on the material. Left untreated, metal will rust- which is fine if that is look you’re trying to create. Otherwise, the piece should at least have paint or a clear protective coating applied. Also, any edges around the cut pieces should be smooth and free of build up (dross or slag). Attention to this detail keeps your piece looking smooth and professional.
Hopefully these tips will help you make an educated decision when shopping for metal pieces. Quality metal work should be your expectation from a metal fabrication shop, and is always worth seeking out in the long run.
